We all want to earn
additional income, but the restrictions required by a second job
tend to make this choice unpalatable to most, so the extra income
afforded by an internet business is normally seen as a windfall.
The internet has taken the
network marketing model that we are familiar with, renamed it
Affiliate Marketing, and repackaged the idea with additional options
like writing, advertising and search engine optimisation. With the
proliferation of computers, worldwide, the Affiliate Marketing area
has now become a multi billion dollar arena to generate income. How
much income, will depend on your skill and how much time you are
prepared to put in, honing those skills and researching new skills
and products.
Affiliate Marketing is the
fastest growing industry on the Internet today. Many people get
involved in it without a solid plan for success. Indeed, many want
to earn extra income using affiliate marketing, without any
planning, at all, which is the most important reason for most
failing. Are you ready for the responsibility?
The word responsibility has been chosen carefully, for, once you
start your own business, you are then solely responsible for its
success or failure. It is your actions, or inaction, that will
decide its future.
Have you got the personality to take you from where you are to
where you want to be. With the right attitude and perseverance, a
mediocre business can be expanded into something extremely
rewarding. One of the first requirements is confidence - I don't
mean the confidence that we all start a project with - I mean the
confidence that keeps you going through all the disappointments that
are guaranteed to be thrown at you. Will you keep trying after the
1000th prospect in a row says "No Thank You"? Can you ignore the
negative comments of family and friends?
One point that I would like to make here is this - There is no
FREE LUNCH.
You will see many offers telling you that you just have to sign
up and do nothing more to earn money - Oh Come On! do you really
believe this? You may make a few pennies, but, to earn an income, you have to
work for it - the harder you work, generally, the better the income.
Another important requirement is education - because part of the
earning process is the learning process. You cannot start a business
of any kind if you don't know what you are doing. You must obtain as
much information about your future business as you possibly can, and
then go looking for some more. You must learn about the product, how
to market that product, what your competition is doing and better
yet, how they are doing it, if they are successful. Research the
tools that can help you - they are out there, and a lot are
free.
Belief - it is a distinct advantage to select products or ideas
that you can relate to and believe in. It is very difficult to keep
promoting successfully if you have doubts about the quality or
integrity of what you are trying to sell. Admittedly, there are some
who can "sell refrigerators to the Eskimos", but they are few and
far between. Patience is also a necessity. You must constantly test
and check your marketing procedures, trying to tweak that little bit
more interest out of each campaign, especially after that 1000th "No
Thank You" mentioned previously.
Develop a plan - What business will you go into? What products
will you sell? Do your research well. How much money do you want to
make in your first month, year, etc. Create achievable goals or you
will possibly be disappointed with the results, disappointment
breeds loss of interest. A quote I like is - If you fail to plan,
you plan to fail.
All of the above entail hard work, but the benefits to be gained,
when they all come together can be enormous. One additional thing to
be remembered is that we are ALL born sales people - from the moment
we give that first attention seeking cry, as a baby, to the actions
we take, every day, to gain the approval of those around us. We are
always trying to sell ourselves - and most of us seem to be able to
do it quite successfully.
Your first instinct will be to just jump in "boots an' all",
fine, that initial burst of energy and enthusiasm will give you a
great head start, but be prepared to back it up with some solid
"work", as enthusiasm can soon wane, if results aren't forthcoming
quickly enough.
When starting an Affiliate Marketing business you should be
looking at an initial income goal of, maybe, something
like $50-100 per week. Also realise that it may take some weeks to
actually achieve this target. During this time, you will be learning
and tweaking your systems, so it should be time, well spent. As you
start to achieve, or even approach your targets, revise them
upwards, to continuously challenge yourself. Do not
fall into the trap of overconfidence, it is better to overachieve a
small goal than to underachieve an unrealistic one. At the outset,
particularly, it is important to achieve your goals
- unrealised dreams can quickly lead to disillusionment and
failure.
As you start to accumulate money, invest in your own future and
join some "paid" affiliate companies, you cannot really be taken
seriously, if you concentrate on "free" programs. Take the time to
join some appropriate discussion groups, where you can ask questions
related to problems that you have. You may even be able to use your
experience to answer other newcomers’ questions. If you find that a
group is only interested in getting you to join their latest
program, drop them and go on to another, until you find a suitable
one.
There are millions of people and thousands of groups, out there,
on the web and the majority of them will assist you when asked,
after all, the person you help may be your next customer
